Blue Light Report - May / June 2020

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

I would first like to say, “Tough times never last. But tough people do.” Pipeliners are some of the toughest and most resilient folks, but we are definitely being tested. We already had many enemies to battle, such as cheap nonunion contractors, biased judges, and extreme environmental protesters.

Blue Light Report Dispatch - May / June 2020

There is no way to describe the times in which we are living. We are walking through a situation that no one has dealt with before us. However, we do have work starting. Gas companies and contractors are proceeding with extreme caution.

This is good for all of us. We all want to avoid getting to a job and then get shut down for one reason or the other. We can only hope and pray that the COVID-19 virus has peaked by now, and we are going back to work at full speed by the time you read this.

We have been sending people to jobs regularly. Not a flood of members, by any means, but better than the building trades work at this time. We do have a few working on nuclear shutdowns, but not many. When we do dispatch, we send the usual dispatch instructions and an Essential Worker letter on 798 letterhead stating, “Pipeliners Local Union No. 798 recognizes that authorities have ordered the restriction of certain work and travel because of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the agents, employees, and members of Pipeliners Local Union No. 798 are exempt from these orders because they provide critical services and essential functions of the critical infrastructure industry and are engaged in an essential business. We request that you accord these agents employees safe passage in their fulfillment of these critical duties and as they commute to and from work and move between facilities to provide services for its members.” This is just part of the letter, but it has worked well. Our members have been able to travel to and from jobs rather freely.

All we can do now is endure until this virus begins to fade away. We must keep our distance, wash our hands, and if in populated places, consider wearing a mask. I pray for our health safety now more than ever.

Dear Brothers and Sisters, I hope this report finds our Local 798 family safe and healthy. By now, the COVID-19 pandemic has reached almost every county and parish in the United States. I don’t know that anyone could have forecasted that this virus would sweep through our country with such intensity.
