Comment Period Ends August 29: Sign Now

On the August 29, we submitted this below comment to the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) on a set of permits for Enbridge Energy’s Straits Tunnel Project. Thank you to the 1,500 advocates who signed! Any signature collected on or after this date may be included in future submissions to support the project.

The project requires permits from the EGLE, Michigan Public Service Commission and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers before moving forward. Nearly 2,800 members and fellow industry advocates supported this project during another comment period this summer with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for its draft Environmental Impact Statement. THANK YOU to all who stood up during this and previous comment periods.

Dear Secretary:

I am proud to support Enbridge Energy's Line 5 Straits Tunnel Project is it seeks permits necessary to move towards completion. Through every stage of this process, Enbridge has demonstrated its commitment to maintaining the highest level of safety and environmental responsibility.

Project leaders have established this good reputation by proactively putting in place enhanced inspection and operations protocols for the project while also working closely with landowners, tribal leaders and safety experts to ensure the safest and most efficient pipeline operation. This safety commitment is particularly important in the context of the EGLE, as protocols include diligent 24/7 monitoring of the Straits crossing, regular inspections and operating the line at less than 25 percent of its maximum design capabilities to minimize stress on the pipeline steel and enhance safety. The focus in the end is on mitigating environmental impacts.

I support the Line 5 Straits Tunnel Project during this comment period because the project:

  • Prioritizes safety and sustainability, focused on protecting the pipeline workers and area residents and preserving the land traversed by the project;
  • Generates critical economic activity. Enbridge has paid tens of millions of dollars in property taxes in Michigan alone for its energy infrastructure projects. This tax revenue is available to be invested in schools, roads and bridges and other vital public services;
  • Creates good-paying jobs for the local workforce, many of whom include Local 798 members who depend on a strong industry to continue to provide for their families and support their communities.

I urge this department and other decision makers to support this critical project because, if allowed to move forward, Enbridge will execute its plan to help ensure an uninterrupted supply of reliable, affordable energy to Michigan residents, small business owners and other community members across the region.

Signed,
