Tell Premier Ford You Support Line 5

Enbridge’s Line 5 is a 645-mile, 30-inch-diameter pipeline that travels through Michigan’s Upper and Lower Peninsulas—originating in Superior, Wisconsin, and terminating in Sarnia, Ontario, Canada.  

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s administration is attempting to terminate an easement that has been in place since 1953 and thereby closing Enbridge’s Line 5 dual pipelines located within that easement. This action will prevent the safe transport of fuel that heats homes and provides energy to Michigan, neighboring U.S. states and Canada’s two largest provinces. Shutting down Line 5, even temporarily, would also have a major and immediate impact on crude oil supply for refineries—and, as a result, refined product supply for consumers, motorists and industry. 

Please sign the letter below to Ontario Premier Doug Ford, and request that he take action to prevent this short sighted action and help create jobs with a living wage for our brothers and sisters that will work on the reconstruction of Line 5.  

Dear Premier Ford,   

Enbridge’s Line 5 has been a vital piece of energy infrastructure since 1953, honouring the Transit Pipeline Treaty, which supports the uninterrupted transmission of hydrocarbons between the United States and Canada. Importantly, Line 5 supplies crude oil to the strategically important Sarnia Petrochemical Manufacturing Complex. Line 5 also ensures cost-effective supply for local production of gasoline, diesel, jet fuel and other petroleum products. Residents, businesses and refineries throughout Michigan, other Great Lakes states and Canada’s two largest provinces – Ontario and Quebec – rely on the safe transportation of oil, propane and other product through Line 5.  

Line 5 also represents the continuation of a significant level of trade with the United States, dependent largely on an uninterrupted cross-border pipeline system through which the vast majority of energy products are transported between the United States and Canada. Line 5 transports up to 540,000 barrels per day (bpd), or 22.68 million US gallons per day, of light crude oil, light synthetic crude and natural gas liquids (NGLs), which are refined into propane. Without Line 5 refineries in Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Ontario and Quebec, these facilities will receive approximately 45% less crude from Enbridge than their current demand. The closing of Enbridge's Line 5 Pipeline will also cost thousands of jobs and cripple the economy in regions of Ontario, especially in the Sarnia area.  

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s threats to shut down Line 5 is based on an ill-informed, inaccurate, out-of-date and unsupportable opinion. Please contact Governor Whitmer to share our concern, and help Enbridge continue to provide this critical source of energy while focusing on plans to construct the Great Lakes Tunnel as another measure to enhance safe operation of the dual pipelines and delivery of critical energy throughout the region.  

I respectfully request the Provincial government take an active role, on behalf of the residents of Ontario and more broadly Canada, and aggressively fight on behalf of all Canadians to keep Line 5 operating.
