As the fourth largest natural gas consuming state in the country, New York runs on natural gas. Integral to the New York state economy, the use of natural gas and the pipeline infrastructure that delivers gas from neighboring states not only provides clean, homegrown, abundant, reliable and affordable energy, but also provides good-paying jobs and hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue for communities nationwide. A potential shut-down of New York State for any future pipeline projects will have a dramatic negative economic impact.
The Northern Access pipeline would play a critical role in the solution. The project would be a nearly 100-mile connection from north central Pennsylvania to an interstate system providing access to the northeastern U.S. and mid-Atlantic regions as well as eastern Canada.
National Fuel Gas Supply Corporation and Empire Pipeline, Inc. have a proposed half billion dollar Northern Access pipeline project – that will transport domestically-produced shale gas to ensure reliable, cost-efficient natural gas supply for residential, commercial and industrial customers throughout the North American pipeline system. This private investment will create 1,200 jobs during the construction phase alone, and the communities through which this infrastructure runs will realize significant economic benefits. This is welcomed news for the hard-working men and women of the Commonwealth. Besides the jobs created for pipeline construction and operation, full-time opportunities will be given to local laborers for the construction of new pump stations, expansion of existing stations and the 24-hour staffing required during their operation.
I believe that we should support pipeline construction and our labor force. Northern Access is a valuable investment in the northeastern region’s energy infrastructure, providing an opportunity to put people in this region to work and help millions gain access to affordable, reliable, environmentally responsible and domestically produced energy.
It is crucial that elected officials and decision makers fully recognize the significance of this critical pipeline project to capture the economic and energy future of the Commonwealth and neighboring regions. Please join me in supporting Northern Access and encourage the completion of this critical project without delay.
